While on the pricey side, truly not more than one would spend for haute cuisine prepared by the usual anonymous brigade behind the scenes. At the Pelican Hill Cooking Academy, the affable executive chef of the entire enterprise makes a meal for you before your very eyes, while chatting about life and cooking, the universe, and everything. Doesn't suck, as Arthur said.

The Pizza Chronicles, Continued: Great collateral discovery while conducting research on something else. Yet another Mobile Pizza Unit, and we really can't have too many, at one of the FOUR Huntington Beach farmers markets. And this one's run by a classically-trained chef. But of course, proof's in the pizza, or in the proof, as Le Mangeur quipped. And it was.

While I've been ordering a lot of spices, especially certain ones, from Penzeys since, oh I dunno, the mid-1980s, in recent years when they expanded their retail stores the closest they came was Torrance, which isn't, as you know, all that close. So, I was pleased to find this Savory Spice Shop. The owners are friendly, and way enthusiastic about their mission, which makes it all the nicer to shop there. And now they have two locations, with a second, boutique-sized new one in the getting-groovier-every-day O.C. Mart Mix.

Today in the blog, a recipe from the owner of Savory Spice Shop (& Savory Spice Stop, its mini-sized new sibling). Very aromatic and exotic chicken with SSS's proprietary Tan-Tan seasoning; simple but with surprisingly big effect.

Jacques P?pin, at 76, has a big, squeezable new book chockablock with his own favorite recipes (700!) classic to ethnic and everything in between representing his 60 years in the biz, a new TV series to go with, and well, I'm just reminded how lucky we are to have him around.

Today in ToOC, can it be a bad thing when a locally- and independently-owned standalone restaurant with a commitment to great ingredients, craft beer, boutique wine, and handmade fresh-juice cocktails replaces an outlet of one of those ridiculous ItalAm chains? No, is the answer. Lots more I want to try on the Br? menu, too.

One of those classic desserts that remind you every time you happen across them just WHAT defines a classic, Tarte Tatin deserves more home-kitchen play. It's really one of the simplest tart desserts to put together, with results that belie its ease. Of course a generous dollop of softly-whipped cr?me fra?che, or, as in our case, a nice little scoop of Philadelphia-style vanilla ice cream does NOT go amiss with the warm caramel and apple flavors.

I know I'm an outlier. It's OK?I?ve been called worse. I don't like Disney, and I don't like sports. And as you undoubtedly know, absolutely EVERYbody else in O.C. ADORES, has annual passes to, can't live without?worships, even?both. Which is why it was extra weird to be at the grand opening of a Disney-named sports-team branded restaurant at the airport, even if hockey is the most interesting, least sinister of the institutional team sports. I always love hearing true believers talk about their love, though, and the Anaheim Ducks love, widespread and tinted by the extra frisson of rooting for the underdog, is really kind of sweet. And, quality local food purveyers name-checked on the menu? Dare I say: Score?
